European Union provides support to Higher Education in ACP partner countries in order to stimulate potential for economic growth by increasing the supply of high level qualified human resources, to improve the quality of locally provided Higher Education and to promote inter-cultural dialogue and understanding among European and ACP countries.

The aim of the current EDULINK II programme is to foster co-operation in the field of Higher Education between the countries of the ACP States and the European Union.

Specifically, EDULINK II Programme involves global and specific objectives. Global objectives of the EDULINK II Programme are to improve capacity building and regional integration in the field of higher education and to support higher education of quality. On the other hand, the specific objective of the EDULINK II Programme is to strengthen the capacity of ACP Higher Education at academic and management/administrative levels.

Universitat de Girona coordinates Edulink project with identification number FED/2013/320-193 entitled “Development of a Regional Master Programme in Pig Production and Food Security in Caribbean Countries” The duration of the project is 3 years (2013-2016).

Livestock production is also a crucial source of income for the poorest, and can thus play a major role in reducing poverty. Pig and poultry meat will have a predominant role to reach the requirements of animal protein intake. It is well known that the swine is deeply rooted in the cultures of the American continent, representing an important support for food security, particularly in the rural family swine farming situation.

Furthermore, in the last years there has been a vigorous and successful development of the swine industry which has placed the region in third place in the international swine meat industry. It is important to note that pork is the most consumed meat in the world. Classical Swine Fever (CSF) represents a threat to food security and limits the development due to losses of animals, reduced production, and the associated expenses of prevention and control programs. Additionally, the disease limits marketing because as a trans boundary disease.

The Project addresses the priority area Agriculture and Food Security with the aim to support higher education of quality that is efficient and relevant to the needs of the labour market and consistent with socio-economic development priorities. More specifically the project will strengthen the capacity of ACP (African,  Caribbean and Pacific)   HEIs (Higher Education Institution)   by undertaking several capacity building measures in the Management/administration and Academic functions.

The specific objective of this Project is to introduce an interdisciplinary master degree program with close co-operation between national legal authorities and university systems of the partnership to enhance quality education system in production and food security programs and enhance the exchange of staff and students.
