Roadways are built to last for a pre-established design-life, but rarely reach it because of premature decay due both to increase in traffic loads, poor construction and adverse climatic conditions. When decay sets in, 'cosmetic' surface repair measures are applied to put off costly refurbishment or complete reconstruction into some point in the future. However, they are unreliable, of uncertain duration and therefore difficult to properly budget for.
The main damage to roadways is caused by water penetrating into the base course and flushing out the finer sand which acts like a layer of cushioning material, giving the road its elasticity under heavy surface loads. Once this material is gone, cavities remain which will eventually subside under the loads of trucks traveling over the surface course. Also, in winter any water which found its way into the base course will freeze and push apart the protective gravel layers below the top asphalt surface course - leading to sagging, cracking and pothole formation.
The European Road Administration Network has in it's remit to look into the future and think about how roads should ideally be built by 2040. On top of their list is new-age binder design technology.
This pertains to asphalt binders and hydraulic binders used in layers below the top asphalt course. It is here, in the road foundation layer, where the life-span of roadways is determined. Compaction of the aggregate stone, sand and gravel material can only go so far: there will always be cavities and capillary interstices underground - so-called voids. Were one to fill them in the voids with elastic material, water could be kept out.
Advances in polymer-formulation research, based on certain types of monomers, allow to built into the soil void-filling material at the construction phase which will polymerise under certain conditions in the presence of hydraulic binders - gelling out.
Working with hydraulic binder material to stabilise and enhance soil layers is an accepted method in roadway construction and has been used for more than 30 years. The main ingredient, cement, however is brittle, vulnerable to water, to chemicals and also to salt treatment in winter - and costs quite a lot, considering the quantities which must be used to build a stable road foundation.
The polymer-modified hydraulic binders here employed allow to reduce the amount of required cement by up to 2/3 without compromising stability. And, the varieties of latex-based polymers enhance the flexibility of stabilised layers, thus slowing the aging process under the constant onslaught of loads from overhead traffic. Further benefits are:
- fast construction through in-situ-application of the polymer-hydraulic-binder mix: up to 4x faster.
- shorter road closure times, less waiting at alternating traffic lights, less carbon monoxide pollution through waiting traffic; less inconvenience to road users.
- possibility to re-use all existing road material on the spot: no need to excavate, haul off and dispose of old road aggregates; no need to bring in new material.
- much reduced project carbon footprint because of vastly reduced truck-runs
- latex-based polymers are neutral to the environment
- latex-based polymers can neutralise existing toxic material in the old road foundation.
Partners are sought by a German SME specializing in polymer-modified hydraulic binders for soil improvement/stabilisation for a joint venture or technical cooperation agreement (if construction company) or research cooperation agreement (if R&D institution) to further develop these binder-modifiers, with a focus on soil analysis. Focus of the cooperation depends on the partner(s) and will be defined bilaterally. Patents granted (Russia) and pending (Germany).
