Instituto Superior Agrario (ISA)

Universidad ISA, partner of the project, is a private institution of higher education, nonprofit oriented, protected by the Law 139-01 of August 13rd, 2001.

ISA emerged in 1962 as a vocational school, on the initiative of the Association for Development, Inc. (APEDI). To concretize this initiative, the APEDI had the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Dominican Government.

The development of the Universidad ISA activities, over the past four decades has clearly responded to the needs of modernization and industrialization of agricultural productivity sectors of the country. ISA has proposed alternatives to improve the efficiency of the economy, through its training programs.

Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU)

Pedro Henriquez Urena National University was founded on April 21, 1966 by way of private, nonprofit, and is organized in accordance with the provisions of Law No.273 of July 27 of that year. The government granted legal personality by Decree No.1090 of March 21, 1967, which states in Article 2 that is able to "issue of qualifications with the same scope as those issued by government or autonomous institutions of the same category ".

The university conducts its academic and administrative activities in accordance with the provisions of the Organic Statute approved by the Board of Directors of the Dominican University Foundation, Inc., as of December 14, 1970.

The initiators and founders of the UNPHU are representative personalities of important activities in the country, which were grouped into private organization called "Dominican University Foundation, Inc."

The name of Pedro Henriquez Urena, chosen to designate the university recognition is a tribute to this great scholar and humanist Dominican glory of letters of the Americas and the world.

UNPHU began its work on November 19, 1966 in a building that was the seat of the State Geriatric Hospital and was transferred by the Government to the FUD to conduct their purposes. This building is located on John F. Kennedy Ave., next to a large tract of land, also donated by the Government, so that the University could expand its physical facilities in a second campus. In both venues the UNPHU has gradually been extending its dependencies, as they have developed their academic programs and increased student enrollment.

Pedro Henriquez Ureña National University (UNPHU) has over 46 years training professionals in the seven schools that make up this House of Studies. More than 29,000 graduates have been recognized nationally and internationally for their contributions in their professional performance in the different areas.

We have a wide academic offer undergraduate, graduate and continuing education that rests on the values of academic excellence, humanism, innovation, environmental sensitivity, pluralism and social commitment.

Our mission is the training of qualified human resources able to become an agent of change, promoting sustainable development and facilitator of the processes of transformation that society demands.

We have a Center for Entrepreneurship in order to advise students on research, development and implementation of their businesses.

We have the most privileged of the city of Santo Domingo campus, with an area of 250,000 m2 surrounded by greenery providing a pleasant university life and promotes the study and to encourage entrepreneurial creativity.

Universite Chretienne du Nord d’Haiti  (UCNH) 

Is situated in a lush, tropical valley on the island of Hispanola, Université Chrétienne du Nord d'Haiti is ideally placed for outreach to the underserved in rural north Haiti. UCNH is a private Christian four-year university located in Limbe, Haiti, about one hour outside the northern city of Cap Haitian. One of only a handful of colleges located outside of major Haitian cities, UCNH meets the need for higher education among the less wealthy of Haiti.

The result of a longtime dream for higher education made available to the youth of Haiti who cannot afford the state university, UCNH costs a fraction of what is required for most baccalaureate programs in Haiti. In 1947, a mission organization bought the site from rubber plantation owners and turned it into a seminary campus. American Baptist missionaries, Harold and Ivah Heneise, founded the Haitian Baptist Theological Seminary, STBH.

Beginning with three students, the seminary had a yearly average of about fifteen students, with 30 in its 1993 graduating class. STBH prepared many pastors over the years and significantly impacted the life of the Haitian church. In 1981, the leadership was turned over to Dr. Jules Casseus, a graduate of STBH who completed his doctoral studies at Colgate Rochester Divinity School in Rochester, New York. His vision included a dream of affordable baccalaureate education for all the youth of Haiti. In 1993, the seminary became an interdenominational Christian university, integrating the seminary into a new school of theology. The fledgling program opened in the midst of an international embargo and has continued to prepare young people throughout various economic and political upheavals.

As a facilities include an office building, a number of classrooms, a library, a dining hall with kitchen attached, a chapel, an outdoor amphitheatre, some faculty housing, men's and women's dormitories, and a campus infirmary. There is a science lab (with basic supplies), a computer lab (with five working computers in an air conditioned and insulated room), a sports field (soccer, basketball, volleyball, plus a track and long jump pit), a work-out room (with limited equipment), a music room (with piano, keyboards and a number of orchestral instruments), a botanical garden, and a number of fields for the work of the agriculture students.A few hundred yards from the campus is a community-sponsored clinic, and a Haitian doctor and a missionary doctor are available to both the community residents and the UCNH students. Now UCNH has a student body that numbers 1,300 on campus and commuter students. Our University offers a core program of general studies: 5 majors and 1 master. The school of Business Administration is also a four-year program offering classes to those who wish to be trained in business. The school of Fine Arts is a four-year program as well, through which students learn music, painting and drama.  Students do art projects, dramatic presentations, as well as concert as part of their learning process and experience. The school of Agriculture (Agronomy) is a five-year program focusing on local, national, and international agriculture and economic issues.  It is now the largest school of North Haiti Christian University. The School of Education that stopped for about 9 years has been reopened for the academic year 2014 – 2015 with 43  students. It is a four year program. A master of divinity is also offered to those who wish to pursue their studies after their license.

The university has been sending some of its graduates to graduate programs outside Haiti so much so that we now have graduates pursuing their study in France, Germany, Belgium, Mexico, the United States, and Colombia with the hope that they will come back and offer their help as teachers.

We believe that we have acquired some experiences that will be beneficial to any other master program that will be offered on our campus.

Universidad Central “Marta Abreu” de Las Villas (UCLV)

The Universidad Central “Marta Abreu” de Las Villas is located in Santa Clara (Villa Clara), Cuba. It receives this name in honour to a distinguished patriot of Santa Clara Marta Abreu de Estévez (1845-1909). Even though its symbolic foundation dated of 1948, this university started its academic activity at 30th November 1952.

Nowadays, the UCLV is composed by 13 faculties and 16 research and study centers. The Universidad Central “Marta Abreu” de Las Villas offers the possibility of study 33 bachelor’s degrees, 42 master’s degrees and 25 doctoral programmes. The UCLV has graduate 11623 students of which 1621 are from other countries.

On the other hand, a total of 2672 persons work as staff members. Exactly, there are 1350 amongst teachers and researchers and 35% of them are PhD. Finally, there are more than 150 collaboration contracts and it has been developed more than 35 international projects with partners from worldwide.

Universitat de Girona  (UdG)

The University of Girona is a public institution devoted to excellence in teaching and research and to participating in the progress and development of society through the creation, transmission, dissemination and criticism of knowledge related to the sciences, technology, the humanities, the social sciences and the arts.

The University of Girona, deeply rooted in Catalonia and Catalan culture, is one of the primary economic and cultural motors of the region.

The University of Girona is well established in the city, where it has three separate campuses (Montilivi, Barri Vell and City Centre). The Montilivi campus is the newest, with emblematic buildings spread out over an open space; the Barri Vell campus, created through the restoration of historical buildings, is part of the historic heritage of the city; the City Centre campus is clustered around the former Normal School, restored and converted into a faculty and a school.

At the very centre of Girona’s shopping district we find the building known as the Mercadal, seat of the UdG Foundation for Innovation and Training.

A newly developed area at the University is occupied by the Science and Technology Park in the neighbourhood of la Creueta.

Universität Leipzig (UL)

Leipzig University was founded in 1409 by scholars from Prague. It is one of the few comprehensive universities worldwide that has been successfully bringing together mind and nature, teaching and research, life and work ever since.

World University Sevice of the Mediterranean (WUSMED) Girona

World University Service of the Mediterranean (WUS MED) was established as an association in 2010 in Girona, Catalonia, Spain with the focus on the promotion of higher education in various countries all over the world and especially in the Mediterranean Basin. The Mediterranean Basin comprises the lands around and surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea.

World University Service (WUS) is an association committed to the right to education, declared as a human right, part of the basis of the academic freedom and university autonomy. WUS, chaired by WUS Canada, has created a large federation with independent committees in over forty countries, and has a consultative status at the United Nations and UNESCO.

World University Service Mediterranean (WUSMED) is a politically independent association committed to the academic freedom and the promotion of academic cooperation and international relations.

Areas of specific expertise and competence:

-Promotion, coordination, development and evaluation activities in international cooperation.

-Development of education, training, communication and research that are directed to respond to the needs of the social, economic and cultural development.

-Collaboration in the creation and management of teaching, research, development and innovation centers.

NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY OF NICARAGUA (UNA)

The National Agrarian University of Nicaragua (UNA) is the oldest institution of

higher education in agriculture and the most experience in Nicaragua.

 UNA has its roots in the National School of Agriculture

(Spanish: Escuela Nacional de Agricultura), established on May 25, 1917. It was

incorporated in 1986, by presidential decree, into the National Autonomous

University of Nicaragua as the Institute of Agricultural Sciences (ISCA).

In 1990, the ISCA faculty at the National University became an independent entity;

the National Agrarian University, with four faculties.

It is a public institution of higher education, independent, nonprofit, and contributes,

from the perspective of social engagement university, to the integral and

sustainable agricultural development and environmental conservation through

training of competent professionals with ethical values, morals, and environmental

culture; the construction of scientific and technological knowledge; and the

production, management, and dissemination of information.

It has its main campus in Managua, in the department of the same name and three

Regional Offices, one in Camoapa Municipality in Boaco Department, another in

Juigalpa Municipality in Chontales Department, and most recently formed in

Diriamba Municipality, Department of Carazo.

During its teaching experience it has worked toward a systematic transformation of

the university, it has undertaken the mission to train professionals and develop

research programs and agricultural extensions, responding to different models of

economic development that the country has experienced.

The university community of the UNA, consists: 4,126 youth ( 74.45% male and

32.53% female, 91.2 % aged 15 to 24 years); 185 full-time teachers (64.32 % male

and 35.68% female ); Ph.D teachers 14.05%, Masters 42.70 % , Specialists 2.7

%, Bachelor´s Degree 38.92%, and 1.62 % Technical degrees, most with over ten

years of experience at the university. Also, working in the university are 350 nonteaching

staff , of which 1.71 % are Masters , 0.57 % Specialist, 22% bachelor´s

degree, 6.86 % Technical degrees, 22.715% with high school diplomas, and

41.14% with primary school studies

Institut de Recerca i Tecnologia Agroalimentàries (IRTA) Girona

IRTA is a research institute created in 1985, owned by the Government of Catalonia assigned to the Department of Agriculture, and it is ruled by private regulations. IRTA's mission is to contribute to modernising, improving, boosting competitiveness, and fostering sustainable development in the sectors of agriculture, food, agro-forestry, aquaculture, and fishing, as well as in all areas of activity directly or indirectly related to the supply of healthy, high-quality foodstuffs to end consumers, while also contributing to food safety and safe processing of foodstuffs and in general enhancing the health and well-being of the population.

The research group “Animal Welfare Subprogram” focus on farm assessment of animal welfare on farm transport and at the slaughterhouse, social behaviour of farm animals and risk assessment on animal welfare. The present project EU Pig will present a WP dealing with animal welfare topics that are at present bottlenecks still not solved to properly implement the EU animal welfare legislation or further improve welfare according to farmers’ perspective.
