1980 - present: Lecturer in Earth and Environmental Sciences.

Topics of interest:

Quaternary climate change (including coastal geomorphology; sea-level change, geohazards and climate); Palaeozoic sediments; fossils and climates; mass extinctions.

Active research projects:

Quaternary geohazards and management, western Crete (with Prof Filippos Vallianatos and Dr Pantelis Soupios, Technical Educational Institute of Crete, Chania, Crete). I supervised 2 research students, recently completed, working in this field in Crete, Greece.

Modern flooding and landslide geohazards and management in northern Mexico (with University of Juárez, Mexico). I supervise one research student in Mexico.

Engineering problems associated with dams built on unstable rock formations in Iraq; second supervisor on PhD topic, in association with School of Engineering and Design, Brunel University.

Late Permian mass extinction event (with Sylvie Crasquin-Soleau, CNRS, & Pierre-Yves Collin, Pierre et Marie Curie University, Paris; Mu Xinan & Li Yue, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing; Qinglai Feng, University of Wuhan; Li Guo, CASP, University of Cambridge; Alan Reynolds, Brunel; Kinga Hips and Janos Haas, University of Budapest). This work currently uses data from several field visits in China, Hungary, Turkey

Ancient fossil reef systems, their components and controls on growth (with Barry Webby, Macquarie University, Sydney; Anne-Christine da Silva, Liège; Olof Sandström, Lund University; Rachel Wood, Edinburgh University; Yue Li, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing; André Desrochers, Ottawa University, Québec; William Ausich, Ohio State University). Current work includes Anticosti Island (Canada) and southern Belgium, but this was previously my main research field, with work in Australia, Canada, China, Europe, Sweden, UK, USA.
