The development of tree-ring analysis in environmental and climatological research; the dendroclimatology of Modern and Holocene Scots pine; the dendrochronological dating of Medieval oak buildings; the dendrochronology and dendroclimatology of Modern Yew.

Active research projects:

2010-2011: The Neolithic Pine Project: Extension of a Scottish network of 3000 BC pine. Grant by the Quaternary Research Association to recovery of around 20 sub-fossil pine stumps at each of three new sites in Northern Scotland, selected to extend a current network of nine sites.

2010-2014: The Wetland Pine Hydrology Project: Foulshaw Moss in Cumbria is undergoing restoration from forestry to raised bog. The site has a recorded history of widespread forest removal and daming and surviving pine are to be dendrochronologically analysied to examine relationships between hydrology and radial growth.
