Introduction

A century after the outbreak of World War I, the University of Girona, in a joint initiative of research groups in contemporary Literature, Theory of Literature and Comparative Literature (ILCC) and History, Memory and Identities (IRH), organizes on the 24th, 25th and 26th of September 2014 the International Congress "A civil war of words: the cultural impact of the Great War in Catalonia, Spain and Europe", with the main objective of approaching the subject from a European perspective to previous events, the development and the intellectual, cultural and literary consequences generated by the First World War.

The program includes sessions that address the issue from the perspective of cultural and political history and from the perspective of history of literature, journalism and philology. This multidisciplinary and comparative approach is essential to capture the numerous situations and developments of the conflict that marked the beginning of the XXth century.
