IDEA: Challenge accepted: how will the young water professionals change the water sector in the near future
The world is changing at a very fast pace, and so is the water sector. The challenges that the sector needs to face are ever increasing, with fundamental issues pending to be addressed, such as planning for resource availability, economy and financing, regulation and governance, and of course innovation and technology. In order to address these challenges, water professionals need to deploy certain technical skills and personal aptitudes; particularly, adaptability, open mindedness, willingness to communicate and focus on collective benefits will be of paramount importance. In this talk I will explain why today’s Young Water Professionals have what it takes to turn the sector around in the near future.

Dr. Reinhard Hübner is an investment manager at SKion GmbH, the investment company of German entrepreneur Susanne Klatten. At SKion, one of his key activities is the build-up of a portfolio of water technology investments. On behalf of SKion, Reinhard is also holding CEO or board member of several of SKion’s water portfolio companies.

Prior to joining SKion in 2010, he worked as a consultant at McKinsey & Company, Inc for eight years serving clients in both operations/supply chain management and the water sector.

Reinhard graduated from TU Berlin where also did his PhD on production network design in specialty chemicals. Today, he still teaches operations management and advanced planning at the TU Munich.

IDEA: Cutting edge but market failure?
Not enough environmental innovators succeed with technology commercialization and too many are inhibited to succeed despite having developed a cutting edge product. Reinhard Hübner will share the do’s and don’ts for product introduction by using the water sector as an example of a particularly slow and conservative industry. In addition, he will challenge the traditional model of founding a start-up to bringing a technology to market. Instead, Reinhard Hübner will describe and recommend more flexible and collaborative approaches that save cash and reduce time to market.

IDEA: Water Scarcity is Sexist
Water scarcity affects some global regions more than others, and it affects women more than men. In Sub-Saharan Africa, the adverse consequences of water scarcity are often felt not because of a lack of water, but because of a lack of water management. In many places around the continent, water is not available locally, so women are tasked with traveling long distances to obtain their household’s supply. Because of these demands, women are deprived of opportunities to seek education or a job.

Africa is vitally important to our growing global population. It contains the majority of the world’s remaining unused fertile land, but still uses low-tech farming practices, and it is rich in human potential. Water scarcity, women’s education, economic growth, and global food security are interconnected issues, and smart water management is key to progress. If we can improve the way Africa handles its water, we can help unleash the talents of its women and further unlock the continent’s potential as a source of sustainable growth in a changing world economy.

IDEA: Sustainable Education: Empowered Individuals, Responsible Citizens
The 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the UN in 2015 offer, for the first time, a universal framework that integrates these challenges with global citizenship. This new framework illustrates that at all scales, from local to global, development and sustainability are closely linked and require global active citizens with more complex competencies to face the major challenges to come. Education becomes fundamental to make this paradigm shift possible; but as UNESCO states, it also requires “a shift from teaching to learning, an action-oriented, transformative pedagogy, which supports self-directed learning, participation and collaboration, problem-orientation, inter- and transdisciplinarity, and the linking of formal and non-formal learning”.  We need to rethink education to empower individuals as also responsible active citizens.
