Media Coverage of Gender in Politics:

European and American Perspectives

CONFERENCE AIMS AND SCOPE

Congenere was born in Spain in 2009 to examine the subject of Gender Representation in Media.  Based on the notion that media construct reality in addition to reflecting it, the objective of this conference is to address the relationship between gender and media from epistemological perspectives derived from anthropology, sociology, psychology, semiotic studies, history, literature, communication, among others. The last two congresses have taken place in Girona, Spain at the University of Girona (May 25-26, 2009 and September 30-October 1, 2010).

The conference will be a forum for conversations about the different theoretical and empirical perspectives of the models, procesess, and limits of gender representations manifested in mediatic discourses, particularly in Europe and the Americas. We welcome comparative approaches, as well as issue-specific ontributions.  Our conceptual framework approaches issues of race, class, and gender.  We aim to answer questions such as:

-          How are minorities in Europe and the Americas portrayed in the media?

-          Who is shaping the discourse on gender in different European countries?

-          How are political sex scandals portrayed in the media?

-          How are current protests and political movements represented in the media, in terms of economic and gender issues?

-          How are women in politics framed in the media?
