Claustre Facultat The Institute of Historical Research (IRH) of the University of Girona is dedicated to scientific historical research from a comparative and long-term perspective. Although only established by the Board of Trustees of the University of Girona on the 1st of February of 2008, its foundations were laid long ago. It emerged from the reorganisation of a previously existing support structure for various historical research groups. Specifically, it was created to strengthen historical research and promote it outside Catalonia after the Jaume Vicens Vives History Section separated from the Institute of Catalan Language and Culture and the Institute of Cultural Heritage was dissolved.

The IRH is involved in most of the historical research conducted at the University of Girona, from prehistoric times to the contemporary era, with a desire to develop a cross-disciplinary, long-term, comparative historical perspective. To achieve this in specific areas and lines of research the IRH is divided into three sections, each of which corresponds to one or more official research groups at the UdG: the Centre for Rural History Research (CRHR), the Laboratory of Archaeology and Prehistory (LAP) and the Permanent Seminar on Political and Cultural Studies (SPEPC).
