Alien fish in Neotropical reservoirs: Assessing multiple hypotheses in invasion biology
Invasive alien species (IAS) are one of the main components of global ecological change, the second known cause of animal extinctions, and very costly in terms of ecosystem services. IAS and damming are two of the most impacting alterations in freshwater ecosystems. Understanding the processes that govern biological invasions in these habitats is of enormous conceptual and practical importance.

The role of connectivity in the interplay between climate change and the spread of alien fish in a large Mediterranean river
Understanding how global change and connectivity will jointly modify the distribution of riverine species is crucial for conservation biology and environmental management. However, little is known about the interaction between climate change and fragmentation and how movement barriers might impede native species from adjusting their distributions vs. limit the further spread of alien species.

Differences in swimming performance and energetic costs between an endangered native toothcarp (Aphanius iberus) and an invasive mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki)
Swimming performance is a key feature that mediates fitness and survival in many fish species. Using a swim tunnel respirometer, we compared prolonged swimming performance and energy use for two competing species: an endangered, endemic toothcarp (Aphanius iberus) and a worldwide invasive mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki).

Effective monitoring of freshwater fish
Freshwater ecosystems constitute only a small fraction of the planet's water resources, yet support much of its diversity, with freshwater fish accounting for more species than birds, mammals, amphibians or reptiles. Fresh waters are, however, particularly vulnerable to anthropogenic impacts, including habitat loss, climate and land use change, pollution and biological invasions.

New scientific article: Mutual interaction between arsenic and biofilm in a mining impacted river
Epilithic biofilms growing in a gold-mining impacted river accumulate high As concentrations. As inhibits algal growth and increases bacterial and dead diatom densities. Methylated As-species found intracellularly suggests As-detoxification by biofilms. Nutrients, DOC, temperature or light availability must be considered when analyzing effects of As in freshwater ecosystems.

New scientific article: Inter-population variability in growth and reproduction of invasive bleak Alburnus alburnus (Linnaeus, 1758) across the Iberian Peninsula
The common bleak is an invasive non-native fish that threatens endemic fish in the Iberian Peninsula. The wide inter-population variability in growth and reproduction among Iberian rivers contributes to the species’ successful establishment in novel habitats.

Abundance of invasive peacock bass increases with water residence time of reservoirs in southeastern Brazil
Neotropical freshwater ecosystems are experiencing a great expansion in the number of invasive species, which is especially alarming since this region harbours 30% of the world’s fish biodiversity with high levels of endemism. We aimed to evaluate the main predictors of peacock basses (Cichla spp.) abundance outside their native range, which are the Amazon and Tocantins-Araguaia river basins.
