The evaluation of antioxidant system capacity is important in aquatic toxicology. It was aimed to characterize the liver antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, GPX, GR, and GST) and to test the in vitro Zn effect (200 and 400 ZnSO4 μg/L) in native fish Barbus meridionalis obtained from the Osor River (NE, Spain) influenced by Zn contamination.

Invasive alien species (IAS) are one of the main components of global ecological change, the second known cause of animal extinctions, and very costly in terms of ecosystem services. IAS and damming are two of the most impacting alterations in freshwater ecosystems. Understanding the processes that govern biological invasions in these habitats is of enormous conceptual and practical importance.

The project’s overarching aim is to develop improved methods for maximising the use of ponds and pondscapes in climate change adaptation and mitigation, biodiversity conservation and the delivery of ecosystem services.

The role of connectivity in the interplay between climate change and the spread of alien fish in a large Mediterranean river
Understanding how global change and connectivity will jointly modify the distribution of riverine species is crucial for conservation biology and environmental management. However, little is known about the interaction between climate change and fragmentation and how movement barriers might impede native species from adjusting their distributions vs. limit the further spread of alien species.
