Title | Old sins and new threats in aquatic environments: Utilization of advanced on-site methods in monitoring and risk assessment of organic contaminants |
Institute responsible for organization | University of Joensuu |
Objectives | To provide an overview of the nowadays' key contaminants and of the tools used for monitoring aquatic environments |
Contents | During the course, key contaminants of the last few decades (e.g. persistent organic pollutants, endocrine disruptors and pharmaceuticals) are introduced including the most recent knowledge about their environmental concentrations and suspected effects. Students will learn about the modern on-site methods developed for adding realism in monitoring and environmental risk assessment. These include in situ methods for evaluating toxicity and bioavailability on-site and utilization of passive samplers in evaluating environmental concentrations and bioavailability of the contaminants. |
