Biography
After obtaining his degree in Agricultural Economics from the Christian Albrechts Universität zu Kiel, Renan Goetz worked as an "Assistent" at the Department of Agricultural Economics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich. In 1992 he joined the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of California at Berkeley as a visiting scholar for two years. Thereafter, he returned to the Department of Agricultural Economics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich to work as an "Oberassistent". At the beginning of 1997 he joined the Department of Economics of the Universitat de Girona, where he currently holds the position of a full professor.

Previous research was centered in the question of optimal land-use. For instance he analyzed the optimal use of agricultural wetland or the optimal management of land with respect to soil erosion and agricultural nitrogen and phosphorus runoffs. Later on the question of optimal land-use was widened by looking at the optimal management of irrigated land and by allowing for heterogeneity of the land or of the implicated agents.
Currently he is working on water allocation in agriculture, land tenure arrangements and soil conservation, and on timber production and carbon sequestration management. Methodologically, the underlying studies are situated in the field of social choice and distributed optimal control respectively.
