Environmental Microbiology

gEMM has been running, both independently or in collaboration with other groups, a series of different projects in Environmental Microbiology and Microbial Ecology in many different types of environments. The common objective is always the study and comprehension of bacterial communities and how they interact with the environment. In all these projects many different methodological approximations have been used to study diversity and activity of microbes.

Prokaryotic and Picoeukaryotic diversity and abundances in confined Mediterranean coastal lagoons in Baix Ter wetlands

We investigate the diversity and abundance of bacteria, archaea and picoeukaryotes in confined coastal lagoons. These waterbodies are dominated by sudden inputs during sea storms or flooding events with limited inputs of freshwater, followed by long periods of confinement, when lagoons tend to dry out and to increase their salinity. We combine molecular techniques (qPCR and high-throughput sequencing) to identify the dominance of microbial groups based on the confinement pattern, which in turn, determine nutrient dynamics. Specifically, we focus on the nitrogen cycle to determine the abundances of functional genes involved in nitrogen transformations. BACK

Contribution of archaea in the organic carbon recycling in freshwater sediments

We investigate the diversity, abundance and potential activity of uncultured groups of mesophilic Archaea in freshwater sediments to resolve their contribution in the mineralization of organic carbon in lacustrine systems. We combine different molecular techniques (qPCR, high-throughput sequencing and metagenomics) to identify the main archaeal groups involved in the degradation of buried organic carbon in freshwater lakes. This research is funded by the Spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad through Project ARCOS (Ref. CGL2012-33033). BACK
