Objectives of the PhD position
The main objective of the thesis project is to analyse the direct and indirect effects of hydrologic alteration and pollution on native stream fish through experimental approaches in the field and in the laboratory. The PhD student will evaluate the effects of hydrologic alteration and chemistry on stream ecosystem functioning (biogeochemical processes) and its effects on native fish through field experiments using effect-based active monitoring techniques. He or she will also experimentally check if heavy metal pollution decreases the ecophysiologic response (critical swimming speed and metabolic rates) of a native fish species, the Mediterranean barbel (Barbus meridionalis).
Research Group on Ecology of Inland Waters
The Research Group on Ecology of Inland Waters (GRECO) of the University of Girona (UdG) is composed by the faculty and staff from the Ecology unit (Department of Environmental Sciences) and belongs to the Institute of Aquatic Ecology (IEA). GRECO is a large and interdisciplinary group with extensive experience in several limnological research lines: River ecology and ecotoxicology, Ecology and conservation of freshwater fish, and Limnology of Mediterranean lagoons and wetlands. Details of the studentship
During the period of your studentship you will receive the following:
· A grant of 14,400.00 €/year (gross, 12 monthly payments) for a period of 3 years.
· Additional funding for training activities of up to 3,000.00 €.
· A fee-waiver during the fellowship.
· Use of the research student study space (equipped with computer, printer and other office materials).
· Access to the research student support scheme to cover costs and expenses related to your research.
· Access to chemistry, experimental ecotoxicology and fish laboratories of the research group.
· Access to training and other university facilities, including laboratories, library, meeting rooms, etc.
· Education to Master’s Degree level obtained beyond 2011 in a relevant area (Biology, Environment or similar).
· Average grade equal or higher to 2 or 8 in a scale of 10 (80% of the average of the grade or similar and 20% of the average of the master degree).
· An enjoyment of fieldwork and a willingness to travel to sites.
· Ability to work independently and contribute to a team.
· Commitment and an enthusiastic approach to completing a PhD.
· Driving license.
· Proficiency in oral and written English.
· A sound understanding of, and interest in freshwater ecology, ecotoxicology and fish, as reflected by the choice of modules at university and/or your current position.
· Experience using statistical techniques to analyse ecological data.
